I first got involved with Hartland’s DOJ investigation about two years ago when I heard the Board of Education refer to a DOJ Agreement but I could not find a copy. When I asked for a copy of the agreement, I was shockingly denied so I submitted a FOIA request for it. I eventually got a copy of the agreement and was surprised to learn that it was signed by the Superintendent without ever going before the board for a vote, I was appalled.
Then, last year, the Superintendent announced that they had failed to appease the DOJ and asked the board for nearly $250,000/year to create a new Central Office Administrator position that would act as a DOJ Liaison and DEI Czar. I strongly opposed that position at the time but it was approved by the same 4 board members the approved the latest DOJ agreement, Glabach, Coleman, Costa, and Shaw. I thought the District would hire an outside expert but was amazed when I learned that the Superintendent had appointed the High School Principal, who was at the center of the DOJ Investigation, to this newly approved position just hours after the board approved it. That’s when I knew something was wrong!
That was over a year ago and then out of the blue in August the Board added a new DOJ agreement to the agenda but refused to release a copy. Then, last week, the board voted to approve a new DOJ agreement which is much more demanding than the one that the Superintendent signed in 2022. The new agreement requires that all students in the District undergo DEI and Anti-Racism training approved by the Great Lakes Equity Center in Indianapolis, Indiana and the DOJ in Washington DC. They are painting our children as racist because of administrative failures over the past 4 years, that is unfair! Not to mention, the board is abdicating their responsibility to far off federal bureaucrats and woke DEI grifters against the wishes and betterment of Hartland students, parents, and citizens.
I strongly oppose this new agreement between the Federal Department of Justice and Hartland Consolidated Schools. I believe local schools should have local control and any board member that votes otherwise should step down immediately for the sake of this community.
If Superintendent Hughes truly believes in the preachings of the Great Lakes Equity Center, as they promote the redistribution of privileged power and resources, I challenge him to make a charitable contribution to GLEC of just 10% of his compensation over the 6 year period that the District has and will be impacted by this issue which I have calculated to be $187,538.42. On September 27th I will present Mr. Hughes with a Great Lakes Equity Center Charitable Pledge form in that amount so that he can demonstrate his commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion going forward.
